Do Mediums Make Better Writers?
When we think of writers, we often tend to lump them into the category of people with vastly different imaginations, or those who are only good at their craft and not much else. And when we talk to an author, the subject of where their ideas come from will inherently crop up throughout the course of the conservation. Many authors will often formulate new ideas, whether by design or inadvertently, based on a movie they might have seen, books they have read, or even video games they once played. One thing that authors rarely say is that their ideas come from the supernatural world or indeed, from the other side. To be fair though, I myself have never met an author who actually is a medium or has any demonstrative ability to communicate with the other side.
Depending on how much you know about me, this may come as a complete surprise to you; I am a medium myself. For the most part, I just prefer to keep it to myself, perhaps as other "mediums" should do. The truth is, that this special gift is only awarded to certain people. Don’t let the Long Island Medium double-talk you into believing her crap, because she, along with many of a similar ilk, are phonies. This talent is purely not for profit.
Upon reading this, some of you might now think that I’m a total lunatic. Fine. But I know I possess the power to communicate with the other side. Before we complicate matters by mixing mediums within the writing world, let me explain to you what a medium is exactly:
A medium is a special kind of person, regardless of religion, that’s able to communicate with the dead, predict the future through dreams, and see things that a normal human being cannot see. However, according to my experiences, many people who are mediums that I know, practice Catholicism or some sort of Paganism. Some mediums are even able to use dreams to predict a specific person's death. It’s all about the theory of the guardian angel. We all have one, although many skeptics don’t believe in such things or simply aren’t born with the gift of knowledge on the matter, and that’s okay.
Take a look at me; I’m a medium and I have absolutely no idea who my guardian is. But what I do know, is that he or she or even it is watching me. I often find myself having full-blown conversations with my deceased uncle whom I have never met. He passed away long before I was born, but I see him perfectly.
You might ask, how does one communicate with the dead? Are there any special conditions that must be met? The answer is most certainly yes, however only the spirits themselves have the ability to fully divulge the specifics. Mediums can only operate within the best of their abilities to accommodate the spirits. Nevertheless, mediums are the only ones who possess the gift to bear witness to these supernatural beings.
So, who are these beings?
They could be anybody, such as deceased family members, friends, or even a person you may never have known who is watching over you. Due to the fact that spirits contain zero matter, they can exist in any form or shape, and most importantly, arrive at any time. The primetime for arrival tends to be at during the night when we’re sleeping our heads away.
Now, for my Puerto Rican, Cuban or other Hispanic nation readers, don't get us mediums confused with santeros. We do not practice Santeria. I am well versed in the machinations of Santeria and have perhaps been confused for a follower because I own certain statues that santeros use. The inherent differences between mediums and santeros is complex and best left for another discussion at a later time. However, I will say this: There’s a huge difference between communicating with the dead, and messing with the dead. I will leave it at that.
Now that you have an idea what a medium is, we can now get to the big question relating to this article: Do mediums make better writers?
In my opinion at least, the answer is yes. Let me explain:
It's one thing to have a wild and vivid imagination; that’s fantastic! I have one of those myself. However, it’s another thing altogether to be able to experience the supernatural in a tangible sense, and actually communicate explicitly with the spirits that are watching over us. Mediums are perhaps the best unknown writers because so many of them keep to themselves.
As a result, mediums aren't necessarily required to tap into their imaginations on a wholesale level, nor must they rely on borrowing clichéd dronings from other publications. Mediums have the unique ability to utilise personal encounters in their works, and eloquently portray the experience in a way that readers will be able to touch, or even relate to, the authenticity of the writing. Even if the author should convey a particular experience in a work of fiction, the added dimension will still most certainly prove beneficial.

There is an incessant drive among the human race to explore the other side to see what may occur in the after life. Mediums, with their ability to communicate with the other side, have that unique advantage of being able to enhance a story naturally, without forcing the subject into the framework artificially. To the chosen ones, writing comes easier for the fact that in their worlds anything that can happen, does happen. In other words, with the gift of medium, we can create worlds that are highly unlikely to be created by a non-medium. The ability is there to perpetually create stories that are anything but cliché or superficial to other readers.
Building worlds comes especially easily in this case, and characterization can be rather complex and layered as it will often travel beyond the corporal world. I find it a crying shame that mediums who are authors don't ever seem to be on bestselling lists. Then again, just like me, many do it for the art, not the money. In fact, as an unwritten rule, mediums are not allowed to sell their abilities to others for profit. This is where writing is so beautiful; there are no rules.
In my belief, the secret to a successful book, one that reads with fluency as well as sells, is to create the crux of the book from outside the box. Mediums often possess the greatest ability to think in such a manner and as such, can make their stories very special and unique to their readers. Although, some non-believers reading a story written by a medium might actually have their pants scared off!
If you read my book, The Thousand Years War, there are many references to the supernatural that an average human being may not be able to comprehend. The reason it took me so little time to write the epic novel was because everything came naturally. In fact, the paranormal parts, or the points of the story where my gift shines through, were the easiest and most enjoyable to write. The reason for this was because I've had similar experiences to what is in the book. That helped me enjoy writing my first novel that much more. From that point on, once I learnt to transfer these abilities into a tangible form of writing and world building, things became much easier.
Because of this gift, I feel that I have a purpose in life that goes way beyond good storytelling. It’s being able to talk to my lost loved ones and realising that the love still exists even though they may have departed.
Are there nights where I don’t sleep well because of this? Of course! Especially if I happen to be coming out of one of these weird dreams. However, when this occurs, I get up and analyze the dream and then decide whether or not to use it in one of my stories. Many of my readers love my stories because of the action involved, but also because of the fact that the world created is so unique, that they may never have thought of it themselves.
I believe that mediums are more special than we give them credit for. They are perhaps the greatest writers of all time, even better than many bestselling authors because of the gift that is unique to them. I am proud to have this gift and trust me, it’s not something that is practiced, it’s something that one is born with.
If you are a medium, why not try writing? You might be surprised how easily the words will come. For Angel, let the spirits speak to you!
